Analysis of NATO's Identity. Case Studies of Libya and Syria This paper examines NATO‘s new identity adopted after announcing the 2010 Strategic Concept, particularly how members of the Alliance view NATO and its new formed identity. The main question, asked in this study, is why this new formed identity, based on liberal norms attractive to all its members, is failing in establishing itself in the international community. The theory of constructivism and discourse analysis method are used to analyze two cases of humanitarian crisis, Libyan and Syrian, and, more specifically, the approach of all 28 NATO members to both interventions, including their positions on NATO‘s role in those specific interventions. Data concerning these positions was collected, grouped into categories and analyzed in order to answer why NATO‘s new identity is still struggling to become internationally accepted. Constructivist theory was used to understand how members of the Alliance view the organization, to understand whether national interests of the members play significant role in hindering to establish the new identity of NATO. The main conclusion of this research paper either is that, NATO members’ division on how they see the Alliance, its role in international relations, as a global institution, responsible for global crisis management or as collective defense organization, responsible for protecting its members, is influencing NATO’s identity implementation and its policy development, according to that identity, in international crisis.
