Cyborg as a Destroyer of G. Agamben’s „Anthropological Machine“ Giorgio Agamben in his lesser known work The Open: Man and Animal diagnoses that history of politics, philosophy and science is a part of what he calls “Anthropological machine”, through which man is created and confronted with an animal. According to Agamben, differences between human and animal are not exclusively natural but rather are formed through anthropological machine. This machine shapes that, which is human and that, which is animal. This shaping is realized via exclusion, meaning that, on one hand, machine excludes everything that is animalish in human and in that way it creates human, on the other hand, machine creates animal by excluding everything that is humanish in animal. By performing these acts machine also creates what Agamben calls “naked life”. Naked life is biological existence that’s has no political attributes and this implies that with such life one is free to behave as he wants without any moral consequences. A physical example of naked life according to Agamben could be jews during the Holocaust, when their political and social status has been terminated, meaning that from legal perspective they became naked life – subjects towards which any type of coercion or violence could be used. Agamben concludes that in order to avoid such tragedies as Holocaust we must destroy Anthropological machine which allows the production of naked life. However Agamben does not provide a sound way to destroy the machine, therefore the main objective of this paper is to provide a sound approach towards destroying the anthropological machine. In order to achieve this goal, Donna’s Haraway cyborg concept is put to use, which fits perfectly into solving Agamben’s proposed problems. Therefore, the main question of this paper is: Is it possible to destroy Agamben’s proposed anthropological machine via D. Haraway’s cyborg concept? In order to answer this question, first of all it is important to get acquainted with Agamben’s ideas regarding anthropological machine and also to answer to critique proposed by academic community as it makes Agamben’s ideas more solid. Next step is to provide a sound analysis of Haraway’s cyborg concept and its possible relations with Agamben’s ideas. Lastly, an interpretation of anthropological machine’s destruction via Haraway’s cyborg concept is provided along with its two possible realizations in current age. The main conclusion of this paper is that the destruction of Agamben’s anthropological machine is necessary in order to ensure no possibilities for political disasters (such as Holocaust) to happen again and the most effective way to reach this destruction is via Haraway’s cyborg concept. It is important to mention that findings of this paper are sound in theory however there are difficulties in trying to realize them in practice. Therefore future researches in either applying a method proposed in this paper or finding completely new methods for destruction of anthropological machine are needed. Lastly it is important to mention that combination of Agamben’s and Haraway’s ideas regarding anthropological machine is quite scarce in academic field of political philosophy therefore this paper contributes into providing new ideas into aforementioned academic field.
