Research problem. In Lithuania Teacher’s assistant position startup was in 2005. Analyzing the teacher’s assistant training standard the problem appears as the identity of the teacher's assistant and teacher functions and the possible overlapping. The object of the research is the role of teacher assistant in the educational process of the pupils with special educational needs. The purpose of the research is to reveal the role of the teacher's assistant for educating the pupils with special educational needs. Tasks: to analyze the scientific literature and legal documents about the role of teacher assistant in general education school; survey by a questionnaire method the role of teacher’s assistant related to teaching and learning; to investigate the role of teacher’s assistant related to physical assistance; evaluate the role of teacher’s assistant in achieving pupil's emotional security; compare the attitude of teacher assistants and teachers towards the teacher’s assistant support. Research methods: analysis of scientific literature and legal documents, questionnaire survey. The survey sample. The survey was attended by two respondents groups: teacher assistants working with special educational needs pupils, and teachers whose educate in their classes special education need pupils with support of teacher’s assistant. The study involved 105 teacher’s assistants and 120 pedagogues. Main conclusions. 1. According to the analysis of scientific literature, the teacher's assistant provides two types of services - social and teaching. 2. According to the questionnaire survey, when teacher's assistants often choose learning methods; sometimes they prepare and select educational tools. 3. The role of teacher‘s assistant for physical support of SEN pupil has been disclosed. Teacher's assistants always provide for SEN pupil class assistance and support in the school environment. However, most teacher assistants have indicated that they do not provide travel assistance. 4. The role of teacher assistant related to the provision of physical assistance for a SEN pupil has been disclosed. Teacher's assistants usually help in classroom and school environment, but almost do not provide movement assistance on the way to / from school. 5. The difference appeared how teachers' assistants see their role in the educational process of a pupil with special educational needs and how the teachers understand it: • Organizing the educational process for pupil with SEN, teacher’s assistants are sometimes inclined to assume more responsible than the teachers expect from them. • Assessing the attitude of teacher’s assistants and teachers regarding the provision of physical assistance, observed that teachers asume that such physical help provided not only in the school environment, but also on the way to/from the school. • Revealing the role of teacher’s assistant in the pupil emotional safety field, was founded that, teacher’s assistants indicated they provide overall assistance related to assuring the pupil’s emotional safety, however, teachers believe that they rarely help the pupil to find friends and like-minded contemporaries.
