Keywords: Spinal Disc Herniation, Postoperative Care after Spinal Surgery, Complications, Preventive Measures The aim of research work: Examine the nursing problems after spinal operations. Tasks of work: 1. Analysing the courses of the origin of spinal disc herniations, fields of their localisations. 2. Finding out the most common complications after spinal surgery. 3. Analysing postoperative care for the patients after spinal surgery. Materials and methods. The research involved 30 respondents participating after spinal surgeries from the Department of Neurosurgery of Santariškių Clinics of Vilnius University Hospital. The follow-up took place within the period of February 2017 to April 2017. For carrying out the research, we used patients’ follow-up sheet, which we prepared in accordance with scientific literature [1-5]. Its questions were divided into 4 groups: group I of the questions, i.e. 1–8 questions, are for finding out the general data about the patient; group II of the questions is for the assessment of orientation in consciousness: opening of the yes, communication, assessment of pain; group III of the questions is for the postoperative period: taking care of the surgical wound, risk for infection; group IV of the questions is for the assessment of postoperative complications. The data was analysed by using statistical analysis software SPSS Windows 20.0 and Excel 2010. Results. It has been established that 36.67% (n=11) of spinal disc herniation cases are within the lumbar region. No impact of the gender has been established for the development of spinal disc herniation. Most respondents (>73.33%) (n=27) had no accompanying diseases, 3.33% (n=1) had heart failure, while 23.33% (n=7) were ill with diabetes mellitus (DM). The most common postoperative complications after spinal surgery were pain (in 33.33% of the cases), (n=10) and fever. Postoperative pain of wounds (r=0,789) has impact of respondents’ sleeping quality. The most common nursing actions are as follows: taking care of sleeping, movement and wounds, prophylaxis of infections. Conclusions. Degenerative changes in the spine are the reasons, which cause disc herniation of the neck and the spinal lumbar region. There is an equal possibility of developing spinal disc herniation in both females and males. One third of all respondents have disc herniation in the lumbar region. All respondents had pain within the location of the wound on the first, second and third days, while on forth of the respondents had nausea. All respondents had fewer on the first day, while infection as one of the postoperative complications developed in one eight of the patients and more than a half of the respondents had sleep disorders. On the first to fifth days, most common actions applied to the respondents were for the maintenance of sleeping quality, taking care of wounds, maintenance of movement functions and prophylaxis of infection. Also pain killing was applied on the first day.
