One of these components is Ukraine's agro-cultural fields. The destruction and loss of agri-fields affects not only the Ukrainian economy, but also the global food market. It is currently estimated that about one fifth of all cultivated land in Ukraine has been abandoned. Various organisations have identified Kherson, Zaporizhzhya, Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk as the areas where the agro-industry has been most affected by hostilities. The cultivated fields in these areas have been affected both by direct military action, such as bombing, fires caused by explosive shells, landmines and the movement of heavy military equipment, and by the withdrawal of farmers from the frontline areas. In addition, farmland in Kherson region is particularly affected by the destruction of the Novaya Kakhovka dam by Russia in June 2023, which left most of the irrigation systems in the whole region without water immediately afterwards. Given the importance of crop yields for the Ukrainian economy and the prominence of research on the impact of the war on agricultural land in Eastern Ukraine, this paper examines crop fields located in different war-affected areas. Using Sentinel 2 data, it examines the impact of direct hostilities on fields located in Zaporizhzhya, Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts, where clashes and shelling are still ongoing. It also uses Sentinel 2, Sentinel 1 and historical weather data to investigate the impact of the war and its aftermath on crops and the environment in the Kherson region around the destroyed Novaya Kakhovka dam.
