Abstract

dc:description

The international literature recognises residential care as the least appropriate place for a child to grow up (Calheiros, Garrido, Lopes, & Patrício, 2015; Padmaja, Sushma & Agarwal, 2014; Berridge, Biehal, & Henry, 2012). Living in residential care deprives children and adolescents of regular positive relationships with their parents and relatives, which are an important condition for mental well-being (Zbarauskaitė & Čekuolienė, 2009). Leaving care can present a variety of challenges, both in terms of integration into society and the experience of personal relationships. The transition to a new phase of life can be difficult due to the lack of human support (Gomera & Mutambara, 2020), which helps to establish the necessary social contacts and to better identify and understand oneself. The aim of this study is to uncover and describe the experiences of those who grew up in residential care. To achieve this aim, 5 semi-structured interviews were taken from adults who grew up in residential care and a reflective thematic analysis was conducted. The data analysis generated 5 themes: entering and leaving the residential care home are significant events marking the experience; the dynamics of relationships in residential care homes are complex; relationships with other people also influence the experience; the residential care home environment reveals itself differently between assessment and narrative; the experience of the residential care home influences the experience of adulthood.
