Jaunuolių vagystės iš fizinių parduotuvių: reiškinio analizė /

Abstract

dc:description

Theft annually accounts for around 30% of all criminal offences committed in Lithuania. One type of theft is theft from physical shops. Such offences are also common among young people. According to the latest data from the International Youth Delinquency and Victimisation Survey, between 2006 and 2022, there has been a significant decrease in violent crime, but a twofold increase in shoplifting. Shoplifting causes huge losses for shopkeepers every year. An analysis of the scientific literature has shown that this type of offending can occur for both social and biological reasons, and the criminological theories chosen - E. Sutherland's learning theory, G. Sykes and D. Matza's neutralisation techniques theory, and Felton's routine theory - have explained how young people learn to engage in such behaviour, how they justify it, and the components required for shoplifting to occur. In order to discuss the phenomenon of shoplifting from physical stores and to find out the motives why young people engage in this activity in Lithuania, the thesis presents a qualitative study involving 12 young people who had previously shoplifted from stores. The thesis discusses the young people's experiences, motives, neutralization techniques used and perceptions of responsibility. The results of the study show that the goods stolen by the young people can be divided into 5 categories: food, electronic appliances, clothing, cosmetics and accessories, goods inaccessible to minors and toys. Participants stole goods alone, in groups or both. Young people were motivated to steal by friends, lack of security in the shop, excitement and financial problems. The informants tried to neutralise their behaviour by denying the harm, the victim, and by comparing the offences with other possible offences. Not all young people were aware of the legal consequences - some imagined that they would not face any liability, others imagined the harshest penalties.
