The peculiarities of the lithuanian rendition of irrealia from “fantastic beasts and where to find them” by j. k. rowling /

The translation of fantasy literature presents translators with several challenges as they aim to accurately convey the cultural concepts of the fictional world, known as irrealia, into the target language (TL). Nevertheless, there is a lack of discussion on irrealia within the field of linguistics. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine how irrealia present in the original screenplay Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) by J.K. Rowling are rendered in the Lithuanian version Fantastiniai gyvūnai ir kur juos rasti (2017) translated by Elžbieta Kmitaitė, in accordance with the translation procedures proposed by Davies (2003). Quantitative and qualitative methods are employed for the analysis of the collected database. Three groups of irrealia are identified, namely situational, ethnographic and proper nouns, the latter being subdivided into proper names, fauna, social and political concepts, as well as other cases of irrealia. The results of the study indicate that the most commonly used strategy for the rendition of irrealia is localisation, especially when referring to concepts based on the real-world. The strategies of transformation or creation were applied to render more unique cases of irrealia, pertaining to completely imaginative phenomena. Regarding the rendition of character names and magical creature species, the latter procedures were employed to modify the names to align with the target culture (TC). The results outlined in the thesis can be beneficial for the future research regarding the topic of irrealia and their translation peculiarities.
