The topic of the thesis is “The Shaping of Nationalist Discourse in China's State Media during the Maoist and the Post-Maoist Periods”. The object of this bachelor thesis is Mao era newspapers and magazines, as well as, current videos posted on the official state media’s „CGTN“ channel on „Youtube“. The purpose of this research is to analyze how the discourse of nationalism is being constructed in China’s state media. The tasks of this research paper are the following: (1) to discuss the concept of nationalism and its application to the study of China; (2) to analyze the construction of the discourse of nationalism in the Mao–era media; (3) to analyze the construction of the discourse of nationalism in the post–Mao–era media; (4) to compare the ideas and the discourse of nationalism in the Mao era and the post–Mao era media; (5) discuss the similarities and differences between the discourse of nationalism intended for Chinese and for foreign audiences. After analyzing multiple examples of state media, the conclusion could be drawn that the Chinese Communist Party during the Mao era used state media mainly to consolidate the legitimacy of the governing party, while the state media in recent years suggests that the current government makes use of state media as a tool to address foreign policy issues and to distract from relevant problems within China. The comparison led me to believe that the main goal and way of using the state media were very similar in both eras, but a greater variety of topics was observed in the contemporary examples. This work may be relevant to those interested in Chinese politics and history, as well as researchers, analyzing Chinese nationalism and Chinese state media.","abstract_html":"In this bachelor thesis comparative and analytical methods were used to explore how nationalism is expressed in the state media.
