This thesis explores the guanxi phenomenon in contemporary Chinese work culture, emphasizing its historical roots, philosophical underpinnings, and practical manifestations. It contrasts guanxi with Western networking practices to highlight its unique characteristics and significance. The study investigates how Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign has altered the dynamics of guanxi in Chinese workplaces, particularly in curbing corrupt practices like bribery and nepotism. The aim is to critically analyze the role and impact of guanxi in contemporary Chinese work culture. Objectives include reviewing scholarly literature, comparing guanxi with Western networking, conducting a survey among Chinese professionals, and analyzing the data to understand guanxi's influence on recruitment, promotions, and daily business activities. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining a comprehensive literature review with empirical data collection through surveys. Ethical considerations include ensuring anonymity and confidentiality of respondents. The anti-corruption campaign has made workers and managers more cautious about engaging in guanxi-related activities due to fear of corruption investigations. There is a shift towards more transparent and merit-based business practices. Despite these changes, guanxi remains crucial for building trust and cooperation, albeit within legal and ethical standards. This work enriches the academic discourse on guanxi and provides insights for policymakers and business leaders. It highlights the need for policies that balance the cultural significance of guanxi with demands for fariness transparency in the business environment in contemporary China.
