Abstract

dc:description

We are living in a time marked by an epidemic of psychological disorders. Typically, the causes of psychological disorders are explained through psychiatry and psychology. However, social explanations for psychological disorders are also important. This work utilizes Marxist and critical theory authors and their works with the purpose of demonstrating how capitalism can cause psychological disorders, specifically depressive and anxiety disorders, as well as insomnia. The analysis is conducted using data from 2019 and 2021. This study uses GDP per capita adjusted for PPP, the Index of Economic Freedom and its 12 separate components, and variables representing the prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders in the population. The Shapiro-Wilk test is applied to the data, followed by Spearman's correlation throughout. The results are mostly statistically significant and positive. The strongest correlation was found between GDP per capita adjusted for PPP and the variables representing the prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders in the population. The correlations for the Economic Freedom Index with both anxiety disorders and depressive disorders were weaker than most correlations of its individual components. It is demonstrated that both Marxist and critical theory can often explain the empirical results. Recommendations for future research perspectives are also provided. The conclusion is reached that capitalism has an impact on psychological health.
