Abstract

dc:description

Aistė Labanauskaitė‘s bachelor‘s thesis on the topic “The influence of humorous pictures and its contextuality on the emotional state of students under stress”, 47 pages, thesis guide doc. Dr. Alfredas Laurinavičius, Vilnius university, Vilnius, 2024. There is abundant evidence in literature that students experience more stress than the general population. Additionally, the negative physical and psychological consequences of long-term stress has been proven. Therefore, it is necessary to study the possible ways of overcoming stress experienced by students. One way of coping with stress can be the use of humor. Proponents of the relief theory argue that the use of humor can help reduce accumulated nervous tension (Martin & Ford, 2018; Freud, 1928). In order to determine whether a humorous stimulus and the type of stimulus will influence a change in emotional state an online experiment was conducted with a group of students under stress. There were 97 participants in the study, of which 84 were women, 12 were men and 1 did not identify himself as either male or female, the average age of the participants was 21.39 years (SD = 1.44). In the study participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: study-related humorous picture, study-unrelated humorous picture, and control group. Each participant completed the positive and negative emotion scales of THE PANAS-X questionnaire conducted by Watson ir Clark (1994) before and after viewing the pictures. It was found that viewing humorous picture increases the intensity of positive emotions and decreases the intensity of negative emotions. These results demonstrate that viewing a humorous stimulus can reduce students' stress responses. However, the influence of contextuality of the humorous picture was not found. Based on the results of the research, humorous pictures can be included in presentations and other visual materials during lectures and seminars, thus reducing the stress experienced by students. A similar study with a larger sample size and stricter control of side variables shoud be conducted in the future.
