Abstract
dc:descriptionAspects of positive body image, such as body appreciation or body compassion, as well as mindfulness, are important for both physical and mental health, and exploring them can contribute to better individual functioning. The present study examined the relationships between body appreciation, body compassion and mindfulness, the differences in their expression between those who do and do not practice mindfulness, and assessed the effects of a body scan meditation intervention on these aspects. The first part of the study involved 115 participants (26 males and 87 females), aged between 18 and 29 years, and the second part of the study involved 15 participants (5 males and 10 females), aged between 19 and 29 years. The participants completed the Body Appreciation Scale-2, the Body-Compassion Scale, the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, and additional questions about mindfulness practices. The first part of the study was a correlational study and the second part was a quasi-experiment using body scan meditation. The results showed that body appreciation, body compassion and mindfulness are positively correlated with each other. All of these dimensions were significantly higher among mindfulness practitioners compared to non-practitioners. The body scan meditation intervention contributed to a significant increase in body compassion and mindfulness, while body appreciation remained unchanged. The study reveals a strong relation between positive body image and mindfulness and provides ideas for their development.
