Effectiveness of policy instruments in promoting electric vehicle purchases: the case of lithuania /

dc:descriptionThe main aim of this academic work was to determine the impact of government subsidies on the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Lithuania, based on a comprehensive analysis of existing literature and empirical data. The academic paper consists of three main parts: the literature review, the empirical research and its results, and conclusions and recommendations. The literature review explores market trends, highlighting the significant growth in EV market share globally and within Europe, with a focus on Lithuania. It discusses the role of government policies in driving this growth, including various types of incentives (purchase-based, use-based, financial, and non-financial) employed across European countries. Specific examples include subsidies, tax exemptions, free parking, and access to bus lanes. A comparative analysis between Lithuania and Norway reveals differing strategies in promoting EV adoption, emphasizing the importance of integrating financial incentives, supportive policies, and infrastructure investment for faster and greater market share growth. Following the literature review, the empirical research investigates the effectiveness of subsidies introduced in Lithuania since 2020, using quantitative methods to analyze data on EV registrations and control variables like disposable income and average car prices. The findings demonstrate that financial incentives significantly boost EV adoption. The research reveals that Lithuanian subsidies have led to a marked increase in EV registrations, highlighting the positive impact of financial incentives on consumer behavior. Recommendations include continuing and enhancing financial subsidies, incorporating non-financial incentives, expanding the charging infrastructure, promoting public awareness, supporting technological advancements, and ensuring 45 that the electricity used for EV charging comes from renewable sources. These strategies aim to further promote EV adoption and contribute to sustainable transportation solutions.
