Moterų gimdymo skausmo patyrimo ir pogimdyminės depresijos simptomų sąsajos /

Abstract

dc:description

The objective of this study is to reveal the relationship between women's experience of labour pain and postpartum depression (PD). The study sample consisted of 2864 women between the ages of 18 and 43 (M = 30.09; SD = 4.20) who gave birth in 2021 or 2022 in any of the maternity hospitals in Lithuania. The questionnaire used in the study included women's demographic characteristics, birth circumstances, labour pain experience, Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) and psychological well-being before delivery. In the study, it was found that most of the respondents experienced severe pain during childbirth, and 23.5 percent of study participants could be suspected of developing PD. It was found that the greater the intensity of the pain experienced during childbirth, the higher the scores of the PD scale. The pain felt during childbirth was associated with the application of medical analgesia, the coincidence with the applied medical analgesia women's expectations, and the performance of medical interventions (induction of labour and instrumental delivery). The analysis revealed that when controlling for mental health difficulties experienced by women before childbirth, more pronounced PD symptoms were significantly predicted not only by a mental health disorder diagnosed and/or treated with medication before childbirth and significant psychological difficulties experienced before childbirth, but also by a greater intensity of pain experienced during childbirth, applied medical analgesia, the coincidence with the applied medical analgesia and women's expectations, and the experienced painfulness of perineal tissue interventions.
