Abstract
dc:descriptionMollusks are one of the most widely used animal species. In prehistory people used mollusks as a source of food, decorated clothes, used shells to make jewelry, work tools and decorate pottery. However, it is difficult for scientists to accurately taxonomically determine which species were used in archaeological finds. To identify which types of molluscs were used in prehistoric times, scientists decided to analyze shell proteins. To identify the proteins in the shells, scientists are doing paleoproteomics which uses mass spectrometry and bioinformatic programs. In this work, two freshwater unionoid were used: Unio tumidus and Anodonta anatina shells. The aim of the work is to see if Unionida shell proteins can provide a taxonomic signature for species discrimination. Both shells were prepared for mass spectrometry and then for bioinformatic protein analysis. Proteins identified by PEAKS studio software showed that I have successfully managed to purify a large amount of proteins and identify them. Protein identification depends on the database available at that time. Because the database contained more proteins than previous similar studies, we were able to successfully identify about 300 proteins for each species. The bivalves of both species are taxonomically similar, but a large number of unique proteins have been identified. A more detailed analysis revealed that there is a much higher amount of overlapping proteins. From this, it can be concluded that both types of shells have a lot of proteins characteristic of biomineralization and proteins that form the nacreous layer.
