This work covers the web of evil revealed in Ričardas Gavelis novel “Vilnius Poker”. The theme of the work is the anatomy of evil, which is a metaphor that refers to the analysis, the structure and the expression of the origins of evil. Since the problem of evil is inexhaustible, this work will be limited to the symbolic structure and expression of evil, based on the concept of evil caused by totalitarianism. The aim of this thesis is to group and analyse the themes related to evil with concrete examples of its appearances, and to reveal the forms in which evil appears. This thesis will answer the following questions by examining the work of R. Gavelis. Is it possible to overcome evil? What is the human position in the face of evil? How does Gavelis understand evil? Can it be defeated or is it just a matter of coming to terms with it? The core of the research material is the book "Liquid Evil" by Z. Bauman and L. Donskis, in which the authors examine evil in modern society. Hannah Arendt's “The Origins of Totalitarianism”, which seeks to expose totalitarian regimes. It also draws on the work of Cz. Milosz's essay "The Captive Mind", in which Milosz presents a distinctive conception of evil and considers how totalitarianism can enslave the minds of individuals. The research shows that evil does not have a single form. It can be clearly visible and total, but it can also be a fluid that permeates everywhere and is hardly tangible. Conclusions - The dimension of evil is fundamental, it has more than one form and it changes it. The inhabitants of Vilnius are entangled in a web of evil that is visible (cockroaches, pigeons, ghosts), smellable (the smell of mould or wet leaves) and perceptible (stalking, premonitions). The study develops different themes of evil: the themes of sensory and sensual manifestations, the city-labirint, the mythical Vilnius and love. All these thematic connections allow the anatomy of evil in the novel Vilnius Poker to be revealed, consisting of a network of evil connections. The work can be useful for anyone interested in contemporary Lithuanian literature and the problem of evil.
