Synchronic analysis of combining forms in english /

The subject of the thesis is randomly collected CFs. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the CFs morphologically and semantically to shed light on their tendencies and features. The objectives to achieve the aim include exploring scientific literature on CFs, then classifying them based on previous research, identifying the semantic fields of CFs and measuring the productivity of these linguistic elements. The scope of the research data encompasses 100 combining forms. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to analyse the data. The research paper includes the introduction, which presents the subject, the aim, the objectives, and the relevance of the research. Then the theoretical overview of previous research on combining forms is provided. Hereinafter, the methodology and the data of the analysis are presented. The third part of the thesis presents the empirical research of combining forms. This chapter is divided into three subchapters. The first subchapter focuses on the classification of combining forms based on the classifications of previous researchers. The second subchapter focuses on determining which semantic fields use combining forms most. The third part focused on the productivity of combining forms. Finally, the thesis is concluded with the findings of the data analysis. The results of the research revealed that ICFs are the most frequent type of combining form based on their position, but FCFs are quite common too, but only a few can stand in both positions. Neoclassical combining forms are by far the most common when it comes to type by Mattiello’s (2022) classification. However, splinters, secreted and abbreviated CFs exist as well, but they are rarer. Furthermore, combining forms are most often used in semantic fields of physical sciences, medicine and biological sciences. However, the corpus-based analysis on productivity of CFs shows that most of the combining forms are not very productive, but a few quite productive examples are seen in splinters, neoclassical and secreted combining forms.
