Strategies for translating proper names into lithuanian in the film series “x-men” /

Translation plays a vital role in bridging communication gaps between different societies, with proper names serving as essential elements in conveying identity, characteristics, and cultural nuances in texts, particularly in the field of film. This paper examines 102 proper names from the fiction film series “X-Men” and their translation into Lithuanian. The studied names fell into eight categories, with the largest groups being mutant names, personal names, and geographical and celestial names. Other groups, such as the names of organizations and associations, monuments, buildings and ships, names of months, days of the week and holidays, names of trade and brand names, and names of historical events, were less common. Based on the translation strategies identified by Davies, it was found that names are most often conveyed using localization and preservation strategies, both together and separately. For single-word names, the preservation strategy is most commonly applied because using the original name increases the text’s authenticity. This helps to maintain the flavour of the original language and context, preserving and respecting the source’s integrity. For compound names, the localization strategy is most commonly used, as it adapts the name to fit the phonetic structure of the target language for easier cultural understanding. By conducting a comparative analysis between the original English and the translated Lithuanian versions of proper names in the “X-Men” series, this research examines the strategies employed to translate these names. The study also explores the cultural and linguistic nuances of the Lithuanian language, considering how they may impact the translation process.
