Endophoric and evidential metadiscourse markers in literary studies: english vs lithuanian /

Abstract

dc:description

This study examines the use of endophoric and evidential metadiscourse markers in English and Lithuanian literary studies, highlighting their role in structuring texts and conveying information sources. Endophoric markers, which refer to elements within the text, help organize the narrative and guide readers through the argument. Evidential markers indicate the source and certainty of information, enhancing the credibility of the discourse. Using a contrastive linguistics framework, the analysis compares the frequency and function of these markers in English and Lithuanian literary texts. The findings reveal that the numbers for endophoric metadiscourse markers are very similar in both contexts. Similarly, the frequency of lexical evidential markers is quite comparable between the two languages. However, when examining grammatical evidential markers, the situation becomes more complex in Lithuanian due to the use of participles and specific moods (modus relativus and modus indicativus). These differences underscore the importance of understanding cultural and linguistic nuances in academic writing practices. Recognizing and adapting to these distinct rhetorical strategies can enhance the clarity and impact of scholarly work across diverse linguistic contexts. This study contributes valuable insights for effective cross-linguistic communication and translation in the field of literary studies.
