Vietos deiksės raiška šiaurės žemaičių kretingiškių šnektoje /
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe expression of the place deixis in the territory of the Northern Samogitians Kretingiškiai is almost unexplored – there are only a few hints in scientific literature of place deictic systems in the Samogitian dialect. The aim of this research is to describe which deictic words are used to construct space in the Northern Samogitians Kretingiškiai subdialect and what might be the reasons for the choice of deictic words. The methods of semi-structured interview and experimental survey were used in this research. In total, 36 interviews filmed in the territory of Northern Samogitians Kretingiškiai and 783 questionnaires filled in by residents of the study area were analyzed. This research has revealed that: 1. The place deictic system of the Northern Samogitians Kretingiškiai does not match the Samogitian system presented in earlier research: place deictic system of demonstrative pronouns consists of the proximal demonstrative pronouns šitas (-a) and šitai tas (-a) and the distal demonstrative pronouns tas (-a) and ten tas (-a); place deictic system of the adverbs of place consists of the proximal adverbs of place čia and šitai and the distal adverbs of place ten and tenai(s). 2. The choice of deictic words may depend not only on physical or psychological distance but also on the semantic features of the referent. Referents with the features ‘harmful’ and ‘big’ are more likely to be assigned to distal demonstrative pronouns and adverbs of place. In contrast, referents with the features ‘harmless’ and ‘small’ are more likely to be assigned to proximal demonstrative pronouns and adverbs of place. There is not enough data to show that the animacy of referents influences the choice of deictic words, thus this feature is not considered crucial. 3. In the Northern Samogitians Kretingiškiai subdialect, the use of the pronoun tas (-a) to identify close referents may not be just an expression of psychological distance in the speech. To find out the specific reasons, its extremely high usage for identifying both close and distant referents should be investigated further. The results of this work are limited by the small number of interviews and the small number of different locations in the selected area. More people from different parts of the Northern Samogitians Kretingiškiai territory should be included in the research to draw more accurate conclusions. The results of the research may be useful for dialectologists, historians of language, researchers studying deixis, and linguists interested in pragmatics and semantics. Despite the limitations of the findings, this work is a step towards the analysis of the use of deixis in the Northern Samogitians Kretingiškiai subdialect.
