The study critically evaluates political theology, liberation theology, politicality, and papal authority. It examines the Pope's social teachings, Pope Francis' active political pontificate, and the politicality of the papal institution. It also seeks to comprehend the relationship between politics and religion. Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope, has emphasized the importance of liberation theology in addressing political instability, economic decline, and social injustice. Liberation theology encourages political activism, citizenship education, and dialogue. The Pope's political actions are represented in two official Church texts, "Evangelli Gaudium" and "Fratelli tutti," as well as his public acts. Pope Francis' apostolic exhortation “Evangelii Gaudium” emphasises three political themes: a focus on the poor, an examination of the economy, and "missionary discipleship" as an engagement with society. The document emphasises the Church's responsibility to prioritise the poor while also promoting social justice and reducing economic inequities. The Pope criticises the global economy as exclusive and demeaning, and advocates an ethical financial reform. He also emphasises that true evangelism requires the faithful to actively participate in community and society, as well as engage in discourse with other religious and secular communities. Pope Francis' encyclical “Fratelli Tutti” highlights the value of improved politics, discussion, inclusion, and social justice in society. The Pope believes that good politics should benefit everyone, particularly the most vulnerable. He associates politics with charity, specifically political charity, and emphasises that politics should aim for social fairness and solidarity rather than merely economic efficiency. The Pope emphasises the importance of religion in laying the groundwork for social and political activity, as well as the Church's participation in these areas. Francis also contends that the separation of religion and politics is not always ideal, calling for the inclusion of religious principles in political decisions. Pope Francis' political activity in the public realm has sparked controversy and reactions. He is actively involved in a wide range of political issues, including the economy and migration policy. On the one hand, he is admired for his straightforward spiritual leadership; on the other, his statements frequently spark controversy, for e.g. his thoughts on Russia's war with Ukraine.
