The impact of social media on adolescent food choices. Bachelor thesis in Nursing. Thesis supervisor lector Jurgita Stirblienė. Vilnius University. Faculty of Medicine. Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing. Size: 41 pages. Dietary habits are formed during childhood and adolescence. Due to its high popularity among adolescents, social media is one of the main sources of food information, and the advertisements presented therein often influence adolescents to choose unhealthy food products. The aim of the research - to investigate the impact of social media on adolescents’ food choices. Methods of research. A scientific literature review and qualitative research were conducted. The instrument used was a semi-structured interview created by the author according to the assignments of research. Research data was transcribed using MS WORD. Data analysis was performed using the method of qualitative content analysis. The study involved 9 adolescents living in Lithuania, aged between 16 and 17 years. Results. Meat, fruits, vegetables, and flour-based dishes dominate adolescents' diets, mainly influenced by the surrounding environment of family and school. Appealing food content and advertisements presented on social media, and promoting fast food trends, negatively affects adolescents' choices among unbalanced dietary products. This is most evident on the photo and visual content platform - Instagram, which is not only associated with food choices but also with the evaluation of adolescents’ body image. Conclusions. The formation of adolescents' dietary habits and food choices is greatly influenced by the surrounding environment of family, school, social media, and peers. The food content offered on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok encourages the search for new tastes and the adoption of rapidly spreading food trends, thereby increasing the risk of unbalanced nutrition. Girls feel significant social pressure, which contributes to their low self-esteem, while boys are more careful selecting food-related content that promotes confidence in their appearance. Recommendations. Adolescents need to understand that reliable information about nutrition should be sought from scientific sources or based on specialist recommendations. Teachers must teach adolescents about healthy lifestyles, providing them with relevant and understandable information. Parents need to have conversations with their children about right choice of food, emphasising its impact on health and appearance. Keywords. Eating habits of adolescents, adolescents’ nutrition, the impact of social media, food choices, body image.","abstract_html":"Karina Adomėnaitė. The impact of social media on adolescent food choices.
