ABSTRACT Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine Health Science Institute Department of Rehabilitation, Physical and Sports Medicine Bachelor’s Degree of Physiotherapy Effect of Physical activity on Motor Stereotypies in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: an Extended Literature Review Physiotherapy Bachelor's Thesis The Author: Sofija Zlabyte Academic supervisor: Lekt. Emilija Strazdaite Keywords: physical activity, autism spectrum disorder, children, rehabilitation, motor stereotypies The aim of research work: Evaluate the impact of physical activity on motor stereotypies in children with autism spectrum disorder. Tasks of work: 1. To provide an overview of the effects of physical activity on motor skills in children with autism spectrum disorder through a literature review. 2. To identify the links between motor stereotypes and sensory processing in children with autism spectrum disorder. 3. To describe the impact of rehabilitation methods on motor stereotypes in children with autism spectrum disorder. Methods: A search of the scientific literature in the databases identified found 130 articles, which were included in the final extended literature review. Of these, 128 articles (97%) were less than 5-7 years old and 2 articles (3%) were more than 5-7 years old. The source analysis excluded duplicate articles and articles that were not fully accessible or did not meet the inclusion criteria. Articles related to children with ASD and PA were analysed for their impact on stereotype reduction and their positive impact on health. The analysis of the sources covered the different studies carried out and the methodologies used in the treatment of ASD. Conclusions: For children with ASD, physical activity has a positive effect on their motor skills and self- support. Physical activity develops balance reactions, social skills and physical capacity. A review of motor stereotypes shows that they are closely linked to sensory impairment. Children with ASD display a wide range of stereotyped behaviours, not only due to impaired motor planning, but also due to impaired sensory reactions. The Sensory Garden method can be used to develop sensory functions. Various rehabilitation methods are important in the treatment of ASD, which include motor skills and independence. When working with children with ASD, ABA behavioural therapy has a positive effect and develops the child's social skills and communication skills. It is important to present tasks in a playful way during the physiotherapy session. It is also important to use picture cards that help the child to understand the task and to perform it in a targeted way.
