The amount of municipal waste generated is increasing worldwide due to rapid urban development and population growth, with obvious and dramatic consequences for human health and the environment. With the increasing amount of municipal solid waste generated, sustainability has become an important challenge. Inadequate sorting, insufficient knowledge of recycling and sorting of municipal waste is a major problem when proper sorting and recycling of waste is wanted. Understanding the municipal waste management of Vilnius residents is important in order to find out the reasons for non-sorting and to increase it. Aim of the study - to identify the factors influencing municipal waste management in Vilnius city and the measures that can improve municipal waste management habits. Research objectives: 1. To find out the attitudes of the residents of Vilnius City towards waste sorting. 2. To identify the factors shaping municipal waste management practices and habits. 3. Identify what factors could improve municipal waste management practices. Research methodology: An original anonymous questionnaire survey was used to carry out this study. The survey was carried out among the residents of Vilnius City. 384 questionnaires were analyzed. The χ2 test and the Mann - Whitney (U) test were used for the statistical analysis of data. The results were considered statistically significant if p0,05. Results: 41.7% o do not have enough space in their homes for proper waste sorting and more than a third (34.1%) of respondents lack information. 34.1% of respondents do not sort their waste because they think that waste is mixed in the waste collection machines. 33.1% of the respondents do not have time to do the right sorting and 38% of the respondents think that sorting waste requires additional costs. For more than half (59.4%) of the respondents, knowing all the stages of recycling would boost them to sort their waste. 51.3% of the respondents would like to receive more information on waste sorting and recycling - more women (55.1%) than men (43.9%). Conclusions: Residents of Vilnius agree that sorting saves natural resources and energy, that it is their duty to sort, and that improperly disposed of waste can pollute the environment. Almost half of residents do not have enough space in their homes to properly sort their waste. Residents lack information about waste sorting and are more likely not to sort their waste as they think that waste is mixed in the collection machines. Awareness of all the stages of recycling, as well as more information on waste recycling, could improve municipal waste management habits.","abstract_html":"Relevance of the topic.
