This study examines how the outcome of the Scottish independence referendum affected the changes and subsequent difficulties experienced by the Scottish National Party (SNP). The research employs extreme case study and theory-testing process tracing methods to examine SNP party change over the period of 2014-2023. Utilising an integrated theory of party goals and party change, the nature of the SNP was established as a party seeking policy implementation. It was also found that, contrary to the theory's expectations, the referendum result did not bring widespread internal instability, significant change or a reassessment of the efficacy of the SNP's core aspirations. In contrast, the multi-fold increase in the party's membership following the referendum may have had a positive impact on the party in the short term. While in the long term, it may have contributed to the emergence of the factors that would ultimately lead to the SNP crisis. The study also highlighted the possible shortcomings of the chosen theoretical framework for the study of separatist parties, due to their rather different characteristics from mainstream parties.
