Abstract

dc:description

Reasoning: Lithuania remains the country with the highest suicide rate in Europe. Deaths due to suicide can be prevented through effective prevention measures, one of which is gatekeeper training. Gatekeepers are professionals who are likely to come into contact with people experiencing a suicidal crisis in their work environment. Nurses are one of the profession groups most likely to encounter a person contemplating suicide or experiencing a suicidal crisis in the course of their practical work. In the Lithuanian context, Vilnius is considered to be the city with the highest efforts in suicide prevention, and it is therefore important to assess the suicide intervention skills of nurses in this city as a policy tool for suicide prevention. This would allow for better planning of public mental health policy and further suicide prevention measures that could serve as a model for other municipalities. Objective: to evaluate the effects of suicide prevention training among nurses working in personal health care facilities in Vilnius City. Tasks: 1) To determine the proportion of nurses working in personal health care institutions in Vilnius city who have participated in suicide prevention training by characterizing gatekeeper training. 2) To determine what suicide prevention skills were developed by the nurses who participated in the training. Methods: A prevalence study was conducted using anonymous questionnaire to collect data. The sample size is 100 respondents. The survey instrument consisting of 3 parts: 1) a socio-demographic section, 2) information on suicide prevention training and experience, and 3) the SIRI-LT questionnaire, which was designed to assess the skills in suicide prevention interventions. The R commander software was used for data analysis to compare respondents answers according to socio-demographic characteristics, workplace characteristics, experience with suicide prevention, participation in suicide prevention training, characterization of suicide prevention training, and suicide intervention skills. A statistically significant difference between the groups was considered when p ≤ 0.05. Results: Suicide prevention training was attended by only 10% of nurses, with a higher proportion of respondents attending the “SafeTalk” training composed of 4 academic hours. 78% of nurses reported that they had personally encountered a person in suicidal crisis or had experienced suicidal crisis at some point in their lives, 46% had encountered suicide at work and 25% had had to provide support to a person in suicidal crisis in the last 2 years, but the proportion of nurses who are willing to provide support is 54%1. The mean score for suicide intervention skills is 14.4, indicating the moderate level of skills. The mean score of those who received suicide prevention training is higher at 5.6 points compared to those who did not receive training, that indicates good suicide intervention skills. Conclusions: 1) Suicide prevention training was attended by a small proportion of nurses working in personal health care facilities in Vilnius City, 2) The suicide intervention skills of nurses who attended suicide prevention trainings are of a higher level than of those who did not attend respective training. Keywords: Suicide prevention, gatekeeper training, suicide prevention interventions, Vilnius city nurses.
