Introduction. One of the most important principles of effective service delivery in surgery is active and harmonious collaboration among operating specialists. The application of successful teamwork principles in the operating room is particularly crucial as it promotes collaboration among specialists from different fields, knowledge sharing, learning, improvement, productivity. Scientific research on teamwork in Lithuanian hospital operating rooms is essential and needs to be continued to ensure the continuity of healthcare services. The aim of research. To analyze the challenges of teamwork among operating room nurses. Methods and materials. A qualitative study was conducted using interviews. 10 operating room nurses working in the operating rooms of Hospital X were interviewed. The interviews were conducted using questions devised by the researcher herself. Results. Operating room nurses, when discussing teamwork, identified continuous communication, assisting each other, patient well-being, and service continuity as key aspects. Additionally, consequences of stress on teamwork during surgeries were highlighted: avoidance of communication, negative emotions, surgery duration, errors. Participants emphasized factors influencing successful teamwork, including surgical equipment, workload, remuneration, emotional atmosphere in the operating room and the team. During the interviews, operating room nurses identified factors ensuring patient safety in the operating room: safety protocols, patient positioning, proper equipment usage, sterility, communication, and the operating environment. It is important to note that respondents also mentioned types of collaboration failures such as improper medication administration, leaving foreign bodies in cavities and breaching the patient‘s skin barrier. Furthermore, operating room nurses indicate that organizing meetings and engaging in informal communication would improve teamwork. Conclusions. Analyzing the responses of the study participants, it can be stated that operating room nurses have an understanding of what teamwork is, emphasizing collaboration among specialists from different fields: continuous communication, assisting each other and a common goal: the patient and service continuity. Additionally, the main causes of teamwork challenges were investigated: high institutional demands, complex patient conditions, disregard for team members, and personal issues. Training on improving teamwork is essential. Recommendations. Discussing teamwork outcomes within teams before and after. Organizing joint training sessions for operating room staff to strengthen teamwork, collaboration and to reduce encountered challenges. Establishing rest areas in operating units to promote informal communication.
