Abstract
dc:descriptionThe Author. Patricija Rimovaitė, fourth-year bachelor's student of the Nursing Department of the Institute of Health Sciences Work Leader Gintarė Piškinaitė, VU MF Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing The aim of the research work. To examine the actions of nurses in the resuscitation and intensive care unit in supporting the respiratory activity of patients. Materials and methods. A qualitative research method - structured interview - was chosen for the research. The permission of the Department of Nursing Ethics Commission was obtained. The survey was conducted in the period from May 4 to May 10, live interviewing 5 nurses working in resuscitation and intensive care. A total of 5 interviews were conducted. The research sample consisted of nurses working in resuscitation and intensive care. Results: The research findings confirmed the hypothesis that nurses’’ action significantly impact the maintenance of patients’ respiratory vital functions. Nine specific actions performed by nurses to support effective oxygen uptake in patients were identified. Conclusions. Analysis of the research results revealed that respondents highlighted nine actions performed by nurses to maintain patients’ respiratory vital functions. Respondents mentioned the most applied respiratory support methods: mechanical ventilation and non-invasive respiratory support. Only two respondents emphasized pharmacological support. Nurses active patients’ breathing post- extubation as a preventive measure against other respiratory support methods when patients experience respiratory issues. However, nurses face challenges in their daily work. Recommendations. 1. Nurses should participate in joint meetings with colleagues from other intensive care and critical care units, where specialists can share their experiences, and discuss incidents and collectively seek solutions to problems. 2. Nursing administrators should develop a unified patient respiratory care protocol. 3. Train staff in the basic and most important respiratory activation techniques. 4. Encourage staff to participate in knowledge renewal seminars and conferences by providing additional day off for gaining practical skills. Keywords. Resuscitation and intensive therapy, nursing, mechanical ventilation, patient hygiene, oral hygiene of patients, activated breathing, non-invasive respiratory support, invasive respiratory support.
