According to the Lithuania’s Migration Yearbook, at the beginning of 2023, 189,400 (6.62%) foreigners lived in Lithuania, in 2013 the number of foreigners was 32,000. Effective intercultural communication in nursing is based on high cultural competence of nurses. The aim of the study was to analyze intercultural communication in nursing. Objectives. 1) To identify the most important problems of intercultural communication in nursing according to nurses. 2) To determine intercultural sensitivity level of nurses. 3) To analyze intercultural competence level of nurses. Methodology. The quantitative study was conducted online during March – April 2024. The study was conducted online in Facebook group named Lietuvos slaugytojai. In total, 250 nurses participated in the study. Intercultural sensitivity scale and Cultural competency assessment tool was applied. Results. 90 percent of nurses stated that the language barrier is the biggest issue of intercultural communication in nursing. Total result of the Cultural Sensitivity Scale was 79.51±114. Results of the Cultural Competence Assessment scale was 4.476±14. No statistically significant correlations were found between nurses' cultural sensitivity, cultural competence and sociodemographic parameters. Conclusions. 1) According to the nurses the most important problem of intercultural communication in nursing for foreign patients is the language barrier when communicating with healthcare professionals and filling out medical documentation. The basis of effective intercultural communication is the mutual understanding between the patient and the nurse. 2) The level of cultural sensitivity of nurses is slightly higher than average: 79.51 ± 120. This is positive result and shows that nurses have a good understanding and respect for cultural differences. In order to further raise the level of cultural sensitivity of nurses, it is necessary to promote education and continuous professional development. 3) The level of cultural competence of nurses is slightly below average: 4.476±14. Nurses have a certain amount of basic cultural knowledge and try to assess the unique needs of each patient. However, there is a need of improvement of the specific cultural knowledge that may be required when providing care and interacting with patients from a different cultural background.","abstract_html":"Justification of thesis.
