The main objective of this final bachelor thesis was to analyze the borrowing process and its origins, and to carry out a study on the level of disposable income and indebtedness of households in the Baltic States. The theoretical part of the thesis examines the literature sources that help to reveal the origins of the borrowing process, the public institutions providing financial and credit services, the process of obtaining a loan (credit) from a theoretical perspective, and the problem of over-indebtedness. In the methodology section, the author provides general information on the amounts of loans issued in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, allowing to assess the overall borrowing trend of the population in the countries. The aim of this chapter is to find out what the population borrowed the most for and how borrowing trends changed in different years. The third part of the thesis presents a study showing the amount and structure of disposable income of households in each country. Based on the availability of data, the analysis focuses on Lithuanian households with loans to repay, taking into account the different cross-sections. The last part of the study reveals the debt burden of Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian households. In the conclusions, the author presents the main insights from the literature review and the results of the analysis, which she believes can be useful in assessing the level of indebtedness in the Baltic States and makes recommendations that could reduce the burden on households in the Baltic States and avoid the problem of excessive indebtedness.
