Management of treatment resistant depression /

Treatment-Resistant Depression poses a substantial challenge in psychiatric care, where individuals often do not respond adequately to standard antidepressant therapies. This dissertation provides a narrative review of current literature on Treatment-Resistant Depression, with a focus on exploring treatment options, assessing their efficacy, and highlighting limitations. Pharmacological strategies, including augmentation, combination therapy and antidepressant switching, alongside emerging treatments such as ketamine, psilocybin, buprenorphine, and dextromethorphan and non-pharmacological interventions, encompassing psychotherapeutic methods and brain stimulation techniques like electroconvulsive therapy and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, can be considered when discussing the management of Treatment-Resistant Depression. Challenges such as issues with treatment adherence and the lack of a universally accepted definition as well as the need for personalized medicine pose great challenges in the management of Treatment-Resistant Depression. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the complexities of managing Treatment-Resistant Depression, supporting clinicians and researchers in their efforts to improve treatment outcomes for individuals facing this challenging condition.
