Abstract
dc:descriptionEvaluation of Students' Opinion Regarding Food Labelling. Food labeling is one of the main information sources that helps to improve consumers eating habits and maintain health. The aim of research: To evaluate Vilnius University Medicine and Economics faculties students’ opinion regarding food labelling and its impact to their food products choice. Tasks: 1) to evaluate students’ opinion regarding food labelling; 2) to evaluate students’ opinion regarding food labelling depending on the socio-demographic factors; 3) To determine the impact of students' food choices in food labeling and food advertising. Methods: Data were collected using questionnaire method. The respondents were Vilnius University Medicine and Economics faculties students. A total of 433 questionnaires were distributed and 415 of them returned (response rate was 96 percent.). Statistical analysis of data was performed using statistical analysis package SPSS 21.00 and Microsoft Office Excel program. To define the difference between statistical signs were used χ2 squared test. For the questions which consists an interval scale was used Mann-Whitney U test and when compared more than 2 groups – Kruskal Wallis H test. The difference was considered statistically significant at p ≤ 0,05. Results and conclusions: It was found that less than a third of the students always and more than three quarter rarely read the information given on the food labels before choosing food products. This information is more likely to be read by the medicine faculty students and students of older courses than economics faculty students and students of younger courses. Only for almost every second student both men and women food labels are clear and understandable. Most of the students (77,8 percent) do not know what the symbol “Keyhole” on the food labels mean. When buying food products students often or always read the information about food expiration date (90,1 percent), price (83,3 percent) and the amount of food (75,2 percent). When choosing food supplements more women than men often or always read the information about food supplements expiration date (71,3 percent) and the information about the effects for health (69,6 percent). Food advertising for every third student and food supplements advertising for almost every second student does not have any impact on their choice.
