Journalists Attitudes Towards Vaccination Objective. To assess journalists attitudes towards vaccination. Tasks: 1. To assess journalists attitudes towards vaccination (need of routine childhood vaccination, its benefits, effectiveness, scientific validity, safety). 2. To predict journalists intention to vaccinate against flu, using the variables of Theory of Planned Behaviour and Health Belief model. 3. To describe information about vaccination provided by mass media. Methods. Anonymous electronical survey was conducted, 102 journalists participated in the study. The questionnaire consists of 45 questions about the need of routine vaccination, its benefits, effectiveness, safety, scientific validity. The intention to get vaccinated against flu was estimated using the variables of the Theory of Planned Behaviour and the Health Belief model. The aim to estimate information, provided by mass media about vaccination, was achieved by choosing 3 popular news sites and analyzing information provided about vaccines. Results. The majority of journalists assessed immunization positively. 94,1% agreed that routine childhood vaccination is needed, benefits provided by vaccines – 91,2%, effectiveness – 86,3%, scientific validity – 85,1%, safety – 67,7%. Most of the journalists had positive attitude towards vaccination against flu. Positive intention to vaccinate was low – 28,7%. 87,1% of respondents stated that the decision to vaccinate relies on himself. 70,4% of respondents positively perceived the severity of flu, 57,8% positevely assessed the benefits of vaccination. In news sites, flu and its prevention - 13,7%, children vaccination – 13,7% and tick borne diseases and their prevention – 11,4%, were most commonly approached. People were informed on time about the prevention of flu – more than half of the articles about flu were published before the flu season. Conclusions. Majority of journalists assess vaccination positively. In spite of the mostly positive attitude towards flu vaccination, stating that there are little dificulties and the decision relies on person itself, only one third intended to vaccinate against flu. Most intending to vaccinate were older journalists, they perceived greater risk to get flu and would be most likely to regret not vaccinating on time. Most attention in mass media is on flu and its prevention, children vaccination and tick borne diseases and their prevention. Population is informed on time about disease prevention.
