To determine the problems that the patients face at the postoperative period after the lower limb fracture surgery. 2. To find out patients` nursing needs at the postoperative period. Materials and methods. Research was carried out at RVUL at the department of Traumatology and Orthopeadics. 112 patients who had a lower limb fractures osteosynthesis operation participated in this research. Patients were questioned no later than a week after the surgery. An anonymous questionnaire was carried out from February 2016 until May 2016. A specially developed questionnaire of 19 questions was used for this survey. To analyse the data SPSS for Windows 17.0 and Microsoft Excel has been used. Results. Mean age is 49,5. Patients after osteosynthesis had defecation problems - 32,40% had constipation, 13,90% complained of diarrhea. 38,9% of patients could not or had difficulties defecating after the surgery. 39,8% of patients were ashamed to ask the personnels help while defecating. After the surgery patients needed pain killers (21,50%) and supervision of the surgical wound (21,70%). Most of the patients had issues with movement (89,8%) and only 10,2% could move without any mobility aids. 13% of patients could not walk at the time of research. 32,4% of women and 15,74% of men had sleeping insufficiency after the surgery (less than 6h - 7h per day). One third of surveyed women (36,11%) and 21,29% of surveyed men have evaluated their health as „satisfactory“. The need to communicate did not increase because the majority of women (32,4%) and 23,1% of men did not miss communication with family at the postoperative period. Almost half of the surveyed women (43,51%) and a quater of surveyed men (25%) were „fully satisfied“ with the comunication with the nurses staff. Conclusions. 1) Patients after osteosynthesis surgery suffer from sleep insuficiency because of postoperative pain, background noises at night and the mandatory early morning rising. Also patients have defecation problems such as constipation and diarrhea. It came out that the surveyed patients felt embarassed to ask personel for help to defecate. 2) Physiological nursing needs were identified on the basis of changes in the elimination, mobilisation and sleeping activities of daily living; psychological nursing needs were determined on the basis of changes in the maintaining a safe environment activity of daily living. Patients would prefer to have more privacy at the hospital, also they complain about the fear of complications and procedures.
