Irish literature distinguishes from English literature that is why it is analyzed separately. The most common supposition about Irish fiction is that the Irish are especially gifted as short story writers. Ben Forkner in his edited book Modern Irish Short Stories (1980:21) pointed out that the Irish achievement in short story has been so rich, various, and consistent, and has expressed a detailed picture of Irish society. The object of the study is contemporary Irish short stories and the stylistics of this genre. The aim of the paper is to analyze the genre peculiarity and stylistic features of modern Irish stories. The investigation sets up the following objectives: 1. To introduce the concept and classification of stylistic means and devices. 2. To carry out the traits of modern Irish literary works. 3. To analyze separate contemporary Irish stories by revealing their peculiar distinction and domain of stylistic devices they contain. R. Galperin, Style in Fiction by Geoffrey N. Leech & Michael H. Short, Stylistics of the English Language by T. A. Znamenskaya. Also the research articles, encyclopedias, dictionaries and material retrieved from the Internet. Regarding the structure of the work it consists of introduction, the main body, conclusions and a list of references. The main body of thesis is formed from theoretical and practical parts. The first one deals with general concept of style, stylistics and with short story genre while the practical part deals with data from the analyzed literary texts. Practical value of the work is that this research and the analysis conducted for it might be used in the course of studies of modern literature.
