Conversational Interaction and Gender in Fiction /

The aim of the research is to examine the differences of women’s and men’s speech in the book “Women in Love” by David Herbert Lawrence. The major objectives of this study are to present the notions and results of research made by various scholars towards gender differences in communication process, also to define the frequency of reoccurrence of linguistic strategies in male and female speech in the book “Women in Love” and to provide illustrative examples. Attention was paid to tag questions and hedges, topic of conversation and choice of lexicon, also politeness and hesitations. The results show that women use more tag questions and hedges than men. The research has confirmed the theory that men and women speak about different topics and that they have different specific lexicon characteristics. Another finding is that women are more polite than men and that they use less insults. Moreover, research revealed that women hesitate more than men.
