Paleoparazitologija Vilniaus archeologiniuose objektuose /
Abstract
dc:descriptionPaleoparasitology is an interdisciplinary science that links parasitology with palaeontology and answers the question of what parasites prevailed in the past. Based on the results of paleoparasitological research, we can decide what food people ate. The results of these studies also provide information on the sanitary conditions of people's lives during the study period. Eggs of various helminths in archaeological fossils can provide information on human migration. Based on modern molecular research, scientists are proving the phylogeny of parasites. The aim of this final work is to evaluate the archaeological samples of 7 different objects in Vilnius Old Town from the paleoparasitological point of view. Tasks: to review the literature and evaluate the results of paleoparasitological research in the world and in Lithuania; to investigate 9 soil samples of archaeological excavations in Vilnius Old Town by paleoparasitological methods; the results of the study were compared with the results of paleoparasitological and medical parasitology studies of other researchers. Archaeological soil samples of Vilnius Old Town were examined by the ZnSO4 flotation method, and it was planned to use the sedimentation concentration method, which has not been used due to the situation in the country. Helminth eggs were identified by morphological traits. In paleoparasitology, almost all known worms parasitizing humans are found. It is important to note that in New World Ascaris sp. is rarer than Trichuris sp. paleoparasitologists are still soughting to answer this question. In the samples of Vilnius Old Town were found: Ascaris sp. (extensity of the invasion – 44.4 %), Trichuris sp. (44.4 %), Diphyllobothrium sp. (11.1 %) eggs. The results of this study correspond to the tendencies of paleoparasitological research in the world and in Lithuania. However, according to the data of medical parasitology, the most common helminthiasis in Lithuania is enterobiosis, which completely contradicts the results of paleoparasitological examinations, but is probable due to the characteristics of pinworm eggs.
