Abstract
dc:descriptionThe prevelance of Sarcocystis intestinal infection in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) Sarcocystis genus belongs to Apicomplexa phylum. These parasites have a two host life cycle. The intermediate host is usually a herbivore and the definitive is a carnivour. The sarcocysts are formed in the muscle tissue and CNS of the intermediate host by asexual reproduction. Sporocysts are formed in the intestines of the definitive host by sexual reproduction. There is a lot of research made in the world about Sarcocystis genus, however there is not enough analysis in Lithuania about these parasites. This is the first research made of Sarcocystis parasites from Lithuania’s red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) intestines. The purpose of this experiment is to find out Sarcocystis genus species and their distribution. Oocyst/sporocyst were extracted from the intestines scrapings after that there was used a microscopy method for the infections level determination. Molecular methods such as DNA extraction, PCR and electrophoresis helped to determine the species and their distribution. By the microscopic analysis seventeen of twenty foxes had sarcocysts. The distribution of this genus is 85%. Molecular methods showed that there is a 100% infection in six tested samples. Five species (S. capracanis, S. hjorti, S. pilosa, S. tenella, S. cruzi) were identified and three (S. pilosa, S. cruzi and S. capracanis) clarified by DNA sequences. These results show that the distribution of Sarcocystis genus is very high not only in analyzed red foxes but also in their prey.
