Although there were many attempts to derive theories that explain homosexuality, without anyone explaining everything in detail, homosexuality has been removed from the list of mental illnesses and all homosexuals have been allowed to fully participate in public life. Although the Lithuanian legal system prohibits any discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, while people of non-traditional orientation still experience it, hear insulting and obscene comments, experience attacks and humiliations, homosexuals tend to hide their sexual orientation. Homosexuals still cannot live as freely as all the other members of society: Lithuanian laws do not provide any possibilities for legalizing relationships between homosexuals either as a partnership nor marriage. Homosexuals also do not feel free and safe in educational settings. To fully analyse the situation of homosexual persons in Lithuania, a quantitative public opinion survey was conducted, in which 842 persons have participated. The research showed that the Lithuanian society does not believe that the rights and freedoms of homosexual persons are ensured well enough and they support the statement that these people must live as freely as all the others. The majority of respondents would not be disturbed by having a homosexual neighbour or colleague, but a statistically significant difference in this regard emerged between the genders: women tend to be more tolerant than men. According to the opinion of the Lithuanian population, homosexuals should be given the right to the partnership, but the public feels less prepared to be granted the right to marriage and adoption. Society agrees that the extent of discrimination is very widespread in Lithuania and half of the homosexual respondents stated that they have experienced discrimination because of their sexual orientation. The study also revealed that cases of homophobic discrimination are more common in smaller Lithuanian cities and the younger generation of Lithuania is significantly more tolerant than the older one.
