Abstract

dc:description

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main mortality cause in Lithuania. The Lithuanian CVD mortality rate is nearly two times higher as compared to the old member states of EU and it is possibly due to several reasons: different lifestyle habits and/ or genetic factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between nutrition, anxiety/depression, biochemical and genetic markers of atherosclerosis and CVD risk among 40-65 year old Lithuanian citizens. 469 individuals were investigated. All were interviewed using a specially created validated questionnaire comprising nutritional and lifestyle habits and health status. Biochemical blood parameters were tested and genotyping was performed. According to investigated CVD risk factors we found, that almost every fourth resident of Lithuania has normal body weight, half of the respondents are overweight, and 26.7 percent are obese. We also found low physical activity during leisure time. The nutrition of most adult Lithuanians does not correspond with healthy nutrition recommendations because of insufficient consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits, grain and grain products, fish and fish products, overconsumption of meat and meat products. In our studied Lithuanian population we found a higher than recommended cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides concentration levels, the prevalence of dyslipidemia was 94.2 percent. Every third (37.7 percent) Lithuanian experienced anxiety symptoms and depression symptoms were detected for 17.5 percent of individuals. We have received a significant association between CVD and the presence of anxiety. Out of 61 analyzed SNPs, associated with CVD, six loci were significantly associated with CVD in the Lithuanian population.
