Gated communities in Lithuania: the problem of territorial integration /

The aim of the dissertation is to reveal the preconditions of territorial residential integration of gated communities (GCs) in Lithuania. The theoretical basis of the dissertation consists of two main theoretical directions: economic, represented by the club goods theory, and sociological, analyzed in the discourses of fear and power. The complex conditions for the development of GCs in the symbiosis of market actors and social structures are also analyzed. The theoretical model of the dissertation is based on the approach that the concept of gated living is shaped not only by GCs as a physical expression and architectural form, but also by the existence of a gated mind caused by various fears and a gated life as a voluntary conscious or unconscious choice of residents. Consequently, the methodological conception of the research is based on three levels: physical, social, and mental. The analysis of the database of suburban GCs created during the first research stage (physical research level) revealed the internal morphological and external network structure of GCs in Lithuania. In the second stage of the empirical research, semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with residents of GCs. The analysis of the social and mental research level, based on the interpretation of social practices and mental attitudes (self-identification and values-positioning), provides a basis for making assumptions about certain perspective directions of possible integration.
