This thesis presents methods for silicon surface modification using metal-assisted chemical etching and CVD grown two-dimensional material coatings. The modifications were performed with photovoltaic devices in mind. Single-step copper-assisted chemical etching was used to texture the silicon surface, which allowed control over the types and sizes of the structures formed on the surface. This allowed for a predictable variation of the light reflection from the semiconductor surface. The thesis also presented a method for forming large-area black silicon using two-step metal-assisted chemical etching. The dependencies of the light reflectance on technological parameters such as the etchant composition, thickness of the catalytic metal and the etching time was demonstrated. Laboratory models of solar cells have been fabricated from black silicon using the sol-gel doping technique. In addition, a formation of pn heterojunction between silicon and a CVD grown two-dimensional molybdenum disulphide layer was investigated in this thesis. The electrical and optical properties of such a junction were investigated. A laboratory model of a near-infrared light sensor was fabricated on the basis of this junction.
