South African cities are facing traffic congestion characterised by dense origins and destinations with activities located in different cities. The roads and streets have congestion within the areas where individuals are attracted and benefit from economic prosperity. Congestion is the main restriction in operation because it affects the middle class and could drive changes in an urban location and movement patterns more quickly. This paper explores how urban cities manage road traffic congestion in South Africa. The paper is based on a theoretical analytical review of traffic congestion in national cities. Based on the current review, the cities such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Tshwane, Pietermaritzburg, Port Elizabeth, East London, Bloemfontein and Vanderbiljpark are relatively experiencing a high congestion level.
