Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Development and Status in Bulgarian Healthcare // Комплементарна и алтернативна медицина – развитие и място в българското здравеопазване

Abstract

dc:description

The historical and scientific development of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and its status in Bulgarian healthcare is the focus of this thesis. The emphasis is on homoeopathy as the most common CAM method in Europe. Basic concepts are defined, and the European concept of CAM is presented, which is the framework used in consideration of therapeutic methods and systems: acupuncture; anthroposophical medicine; Ayurveda; yoga; kinesiology; naturopathy; osteopathy; reflexology; Tibetan medicine; Traditional Chinese medicine; phototherapy; chiropractic; homoeopathy; shiatsu. Each method is considered as an essence, historical development and current state in Europe and Bulgaria. The historical and scientific development of the types of CAM therapies in Bulgaria shows that they are actively present in society and need to be correctly and comprehensively presented in the scientific community, among the medical community and before civil society. This requires the dissemination of information and the creation of a network of stakeholders. A situational analysis of CAM in Bulgarian healthcare is made, including a classic SWOT analysis. The essence of the unconventional methods is analysed - their internal characteristics and the conditions in the world and Bulgaria, which favour or hinder the integration of these methods in modern Bulgarian healthcare. After the analysis, it can be summarized that for the establishment of CAM in Bulgarian healthcare, it is necessary to use collaborative, communication, and constructive strategies.
