Health-related Quality of Life in the Community // Качество на живот, свързано със здравето в общността

[EN] The study combines the concepts of "health-related quality of life" (HrQoL) , "health promotion", "community" and "social capital"(SC) and applies them to the Bulgarian environment. The research did not identify any study in Bulgaria which has investigated the HrQoL of the general population, neither of a sub-population at a community level. The overall objective of this study is to measure and analyze the HrQoL in a community and further to assess the influence of demographic, socio-economic and behavioral factors on HrQoL using quantitative and qualitative methods. Furthermore, the relationship between HrQoL and SC is analyzed through a network-based approach. Evaluation of HrQoL identifies health inequalities in different subgroups and can help to guide policies or interventions to improve the population health. The study applies a mixed methods approach, and as such it combines quantitative and qualitative methods. The research design is sequential explanatory mixed methods which includes two consecutive phases: the first phase utilizes quantitative methods (EQ-5D-3L- survey- Pilot survey - 2010; real survey - 2011) and the second phase, qualitative methods (Delphi study and Textual Analysis-2013). The design has been chosen as we prioritize the quantitative data analysis and then use qualitative findings to help contextualize quantitative results. The results and recommendations are published in "Social Medicine", in the Proceedings of the EuroQol Group etc. The analyses show that health is not just a focus of the health care policy but a matter of economic and social policies. The results of this study could give the impetus to obtain support for the improvement of HrQoL of the communities from the relevant local and national government.
