Antioxidant activity of Bulgarian medicinal plants and related biological effects // Антиоксидантна активност на български лечебни растения и свързани с нея биологични ефекти

The dissertation thesis is the first systematic research of Bulgarian medicinal plants in terms of antioxidant potential and its related biological effects. It provides a link between ethnopharmacological data and the mechanisms of therapeutic action of herbs. A significant contribution of this work is the algorithm proposed for the study of medicinal plants by combining two approaches, and by the means of modern molecular biology methods: (1) In vitro to determine the antioxidant activity and the phytochemical composition; 2) In vivo studies in experimental animals and humans, and on cell cultures. Scientific evidence is obtained that the total polyphenol content and the associated antioxidant capacity across many of Bulgarian plants are high and correlate positively. The effects of Agrimonia eupatoria, Sambucus ebulus and Cotinus coggygria on redox sensitive gene expression and the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and anti-diabetes activities of the herbs were established. The potential of A. eupatoria C.coggygria to affect the mechanisms of insulin resistance involving a direct effect on gene expression and indirectly by inhibition of the factors supporting the low-grade inflammation was elucidated. It has been demonstrated that A. eupatoria and S. ebulus improve lipid profile in humans and C.coggygria - in animals, thus providing evidence of the potential of the herbs in the prevention of CVD. These scientific findings reveal the potential of Bulgarian herbs as health resource in accordance to data from traditional medicine. They provide evidence that these plants may be used for prophylaxis and for reducing the overall morbidity of the population.
