V- Shaped Defects – Epidemiology, Clinical Picture and Obturation Opportunities // Клиновидни дефекти – епидемиология, клинична картина и възможности за обтуриране

Abstract

dc:description

Wedge-shaped defects, such as non-carious disease of the hard dental tissues, are observed in a small percentage of the patients studied. They are of interest to the dentist because they lead to some disorders associated with increased sensitivity of the affected teeth, eating disorders, plaque build-up and impaired aesthetics in the front teeth. Their deepening leads to pulp and periodontium disease. The present work deals with epidemiology, the clinical picture and the possibilities of v-shaped defects. The leading role of local factors - tooth brushing frequency and hardness of the toothbrush in the aetiology of wedge defects - has been confirmed. Their prevention is aimed at changing the patient's oral hygiene. Deepening them requires fitting with appropriate material. In the present work, the application of three types of materials - glass-ionomer cement, liquid, and universal photo composites - has been investigated through experimentation and simulation analysis. The universal nanohybrid photo composite is most suitable for v-shaped defects. It exhibits the lowest micro-penetration compared to the other two materials used. The obstruction's success over time also depends on clinical factors - the location of the defect at the enamel-cement boundary and the possibilities for field isolation. The present work will significantly benefit dentists in selecting the most appropriate material in such clinical cases.
