Midwifery Health Care in Cervical Cancer Prevention // Акушерска здравна грижа при профилактика на рака на маточната шийка

Cervical cancer is one of the most common oncological diseases among women worldwide. According to the World Health Organization data (WHO), an estimated 570 000 new cases were reported in 2018. According to the Bulgarian National Cancer Registry data, from 1981 to 2013, there was a threefold increase in the new cases of cervical cancer. The number of the new cervical cancers is about 1100 – 1200 annually, while the cervical cancer deaths have been between 350 and 400 for the past few years. This means that every day a woman dies of cervical cancer and three new cases are diagnosed in Bulgaria. Involvement of midwives at the different levels of prophylaxis could help to reduce the number of the annually diagnosed cervical cancer cases and its detection at an earlier stage.
