Organisation and Results of a Programme for Early Detection and Follow-Up of Children Born Small for Their Gestational Age // Организация и резултати от програма за ранно откриване и обхващане на деца, родени малки за гестационната си възраст
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe thesis explores the issue of children born small for their gestational age (SGA). The thesis aims to create, introduce and evaluate a scientifically applied approach (Programme) to define and track the SGA children in Bulgaria for early detection and avoidance of subsequent serious consequences. A pilot Programme for joint efforts of the Bulgarian Neonatology Association and the Varna Society of Pediatric Endocrinology was created. A multidisciplinary team of neonatologists, paediatric endocrinologists, and IT and PR specialists has been used. A website, email and Facebook page have been created to spread information. It has been implemented in 23 neonatological structures in the country. Barriers and facilitators have been assessed several times, and the Programme has been adopted in a timely manner. For the entire period, 794 SGA newborns (3.2% of all newborns) and 443 signed informed consent. The prevalence of the condition varies in different areas; the difference is due to the extensive clinical work and few staff in neonatal structures and to some socio-cultural factors. At the time of writing the dissertation, the project's second stage is still being carried out. Although the pilot program has shown its potential, measures should be taken to raise public awareness and detect these children in maternity wards.
